WINX WINS 20TH GROUP 1 IN GEORGE MAIN STAKES
In Australian racing history few horses have dominated their era, but rarely have the wins been consistently of Group 1 standard, with the opposition too being of the same level. In her 27th successive win, Winx as always, seemed to be in trouble at the 300m marker allowing the frontrunners a sizable lead at the turn for home but then, cruised to an effortless win by four lengths in the mile contest. In Winx’s case very rarely has the field been substandard. Even in the small field she had to give Le Romain (Hard Spun) a few lengths head start before opening up that four length margin. Le Romain is a three-time Gr.1 winner.
Having achieved what she has and against whom, it is now generally conceded Winx is the best horse to have raced in Australia since Tulloch (Khorassan) in the 1950’s. This race might turn out to have been the last time Sydneysiders got to see Winx in her home town. She will have one more run, probably the Gr.1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on 6th October before trying to create history as the first four-time winner of the Gr.1 W S Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
