BAFFERT HAS ANOTHER TRIPLE CROWN – CANDIDATE IMPROBABLE CAPTURES THE CASH CALL FUTURITY
– LOS ALAMITOS, CALIFORNIA
This important race for two-year-olds has now been at run at Los Alamitos for the past five years since the demise of Hollywood Park, and trainer Bob Baffert has won every running so far. This year’s version of the $300,000 race was no exception as his promising unbeaten colt IMPROBABLE cantered home by five lengths from stablemate Mucho Gusto. The son of City Zip is unbeaten in three starts and is now the likely early favorite for the 2019 Kentucky Derby. With jockey Drayden Van Dyke keeping out of trouble in the small field, Improbable showed strong finishing powers in the long stretch to power home impressively. Improbable was purchased for $200,000 at the Keeneland 2017 yearling sales and is out of the A.P.Indy mare Rare Event. He broke his maiden at Santa Anita and then followed up in the Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs on Breeders Cup weekend. The fact that the Futurity has been downgraded to a Grade Two Race for 2019, does not diminish the performance of the winner, who looks like having a very bright future.
Also on the same card was the running of the Hollywood Starlet for two-year-old fillies, and yes Baffert again took home the cheque after the victory of CHASING YESTERDAY, who happens to be a half-sister to American Pharoah. She had to struggle a bit to get up in a photo finish over long shot Enaya Alrabb, but the 6-4 favorite improved her record to four wins from five starts, with her only blemish coming after a poor run when she was shipped to Saratoga. She is a daughter of Tapit and she was stretching out for the first time going two turns.
