THE KOLKATA MONSOON MEET 2019

The Royal Calcutta Turf Club.

The Kolkata Monsoon meet commenced on 2 July 2019 with the track looking lush after rains took care of the need for water, after the rather harsh summer. The 18 day meeting will conclude on 15 October, 2019 after conducting a total of 126 races, 24 of which will be trophy races.

The number of horses based in Kolkata has remained almost the same at 433 Thoroughbreds (which includes 103 two-year-olds). Last year the numbers were 422 Thoroughbreds and 95 two-year-olds. As always outstation horses are sure to invade the centre to attack the Group and Classic races.

Advertised stake money has come down to ₹5.34crore as against ₹5.67crore in 2018. 19 ‘A’ licensed trainers will vie for stakes and glory with trainers Vijay Singh, Bharath Singh and James McKeown stabling the cream of the crop taking on Javed Khan, Bath and the others who will fight hard for their share of the races. With six race days already done Vijay Singh tops the list with 9 wins, Javed Khan in second with 5.

18 jockeys have been granted “A” licenses and 7 apprentices will also be seen in action.
