OOTACAMUND
The picturesque hill station of Ootacamund, commonly referred to as Ooty and today known as Udhagamandalam is located 564 km from Madras about 2286 metres above sea level. On May 18, 1894 there was a formal race meeting held under the Turf Club Rules. The reclamation of a portion of the lake above the Willow Bund which took place in 1896-1899, enabled the formation of a proper course around the Park. The length of the course is one mile and the width varies from 30-60ft.

The race stand cum pavilion was completed in 1898 and was opened at the meeting on May 6th the following year. Racing is conducted at this picturesque hill station when the intense heat is unfavourable for racing elsewhere. In the distant past horses from other centres, particularly dry-coated horses, from Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Calcutta and Madras used to summer their horses in Ootacamund during their racing season but for more than two decades no outstation horses other than those from Madras used to visit the centre. It’s only since 2016 that horses from all other centres have started summering their horses in Ooty as conditions have now become administratively more favourable.

Race Track: The race track is a challenging one. It is an oval shaped, right-hand course measuring approximately 1950 metres with four sharp curves and pronounced gradients. The downhill backstretch drops 13.10metres (43 feet) from 1800 metres to 800 metres and climbs 11.58metres (38 feet) from that point to the winning post, with a further rise of 1.5metres (five feet) from the winning post to the 1800 metre marker. This demanding and testing race track, with its gradients, bends and a distinct short straight, places a premium both on the speed and endurance of horses and the skill and experience of jockeys. A win on this track is therefore a significant achievement.
General information:
- The Colts’ Trial Stakes and the Fillies’ Trial Stakes run during the Bangalore summer season were initially not meant to be Classics, in the true sense of the term. As their names implied, they were meant to give three-year-olds in Bangalore their first major outing over a mile (1600 metres). They were introduced in the summer season program of 1959.
- The Kunigal Derby was first run in 1962 as a mile race for three-year-olds. The next year the name was changed to the Bangalore Derby and in the following year, the distance was changed to 2000 metres, the present distance at which it is run.
- Close Circuit Television coverage of the races was introduced in 1973 in black and white coverage. Colour coverage and replays of the races were introduced a year later.
- The Bangalore Turf Club formed an Appeal Board to help aggrieved professionals in 1988.
- An analytical laboratory was set up in January 1990, to conduct pre-race drug testing.
- It is probably one of the few race courses in the world where a limited space of 85acres of land has been so comprehensively utilized to provide stabling for close to 1000 horses, three training tracts, an equine swimming pool, training schools, walking rings, a veterinary hospital and even an amateur riding school.
